Best Time to Schedule a Meeting Between EST and IST (Live Times)

New York and India never share a full working day. Here are the two windows that do work, worked out live for this week, and the two dates a year when they move.

The numbers in this guide update themselves. Meeting times are for Thu, Oct 29, with daylight saving applied.

The short answer

Book the call at 8:00 AM in New York. That's 5:30 PM in India this week: early for the US side, end of the day for the India side, and inside everyone's waking hours. If India can stay a little later, 9:00 AM New York (6:30 PM in India) gives the US side a normal start.

There is no time when both sides are inside a 9-to-5 day. You have to choose who stretches, and the Meeting Planner shows you exactly how far.

New York to India, hour by hour

Worked out live for Thu, Oct 29. New York is on EDT this week; India is always on IST.

New York (EDT)India (IST)How it lands
6:00 AM3:30 PMToo early for most US people. India is mid-afternoon.
7:00 AM4:30 PMEarly start in the US. India is in its last working hours.
7:30 AM5:00 PMA good slot if the US side can start early.
8:00 AM5:30 PMThe usual best choice. Both sides awake, India finishing up.
9:00 AM6:30 PMNormal US start. India is into the evening.
10:00 AM7:30 PMLate evening in India. Fine once in a while, not weekly.
9:30 PM7:00 AM (next day)The other window: India's morning, the US side's late evening.
Times update automatically. When the US changes its clocks, every India time in this table moves by an hour.

Why the gap is sometimes 9.5 hours and sometimes 10.5

India doesn't use daylight saving. The US does. So the difference between New York and India changes twice a year, on the US dates only:

  • From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, New York is on EDT (UTC-4) and India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead.
  • The rest of the year New York is on EST (UTC-5) and India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead.
  • In 2026 the US clocks go back on Sunday 1 November. In 2027 they go forward on Sunday 14 March.

That's why a weekly 8:00 AM New York call lands an hour later in India for the winter months. People often say "EST" all year, but in summer New York is actually on EDT. If you write times as "9:00 AM New York time" instead of "9:00 AM EST", nobody gets the wrong hour.

West Coast and India

From San Francisco or Los Angeles there's even less room. 7:00 AM Pacific is 7:30 PM in India this week, so a West Coast call almost always means a very early start on the US side or a late night in India. If the team spans both US coasts and India, the Meeting Planner will tell you plainly that there's no shared working time, and show the least-bad slot.

For a recurring call, rotate who stretches

If you meet every week, don't make India stay late forever. A simple rule that holds up:

  1. 1
Default to the US early slot.

8:00 AM New York (5:30 PM in India) for routine check-ins.

  2. 2
    Once a month, flip it.

9:30 PM New York (7:00 AM (next day) in India) so the India side gets a morning call.

  3. 3
    Move status updates to writing.

Keep live calls for decisions. Everything else can wait for the other side's morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time for a meeting between EST and IST?

8:00 AM New York time is usually best: early for the US side and the end of the working day in India (5:30 PM IST this week). There's no time when both sides are inside a 9-to-5 day, so someone always stretches. The Meeting Planner shows the options for your exact cities.

How many hours ahead is India from EST?

India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York while the US is on standard time (EST, roughly November to March), and 9 hours 30 minutes ahead while the US is on daylight time (EDT). India doesn't change its clocks, so the gap only moves on the US dates.

Is there any overlap between US and India business hours?

Not between a 9-to-5 day on both sides. The closest fits are the US early morning (India's late afternoon or evening) and the US late evening (India's morning). Rotating between the two keeps one side from always taking the inconvenient hour.
